A note from Stacey
Summer is a wonderful time to slow down, enjoy time with family and explore new places.
It is also a good opportunity for employers and plan administrators to pause and review a few important benefits details. From travel coverage to dependant eligibility, small updates and clear communication can help prevent larger problems later.
In this month’s newsletter, I’m sharing a few practical reminders to help your employees feel informed and supported throughout the summer.
EDUCATIONAL INSIGHT
Before Employees Travel, Do They Understand Their Coverage?
Many group benefits plans include emergency travel coverage—but having coverage and understanding it are two different things.
Before leaving Ontario or travelling outside Canada, employees should know:
– Where to find their travel policy and emergency assistance number
– Whether their plan includes emergency medical and trip cancellation or interruption
– The maximum trip duration
– Whether a stability period applies to existing medical conditions
– How medication or treatment changes could affect eligibility
– Who to contact before receiving treatment, whenever possible
– Whether travelling for certain activities creates exclusions
Remind employees that coverage varies by contract. They should review their benefits booklet and contact the insurance provider when they have questions about their personal medical situation.
NEXT STEP
Consider sharing your travel benefits information before employees leave for summer vacations. I’m also happy to provide a short employee education session.
CLIENT SUCCESS STORY
Clear Communication Creates More Confident Employees
An employer offered travel coverage as part of its group benefits plan, but employees were unsure where to find the information or who to contact during an emergency.
A short employee education session helped the team understand their emergency assistance number, stability requirements and the importance of reviewing coverage before travelling.
The benefit was already there. What was missing was clear communication.
Sometimes, helping employees appreciate their benefits doesn’t require adding more coverage—it simply requires making the existing plan easier to understand.
COMPLIANCE UPDATE
A Mid-Year Plan Administration Review
July is a good time for plan administrators to review:
– Over-age dependants who may no longer qualify
– Full-time students who must provide updated eligibility information
– Recent marriages, separations, births or other life events
– Employee salary changes that could affect life or disability benefits
– Outstanding beneficiary designations
– Employees approaching or completing their waiting period
– Changes that were not reported within the plan’s enrolment window
The exact eligibility rules and reporting deadlines should always be confirmed using the applicable benefits contract.
Key Takeaway:
Accurate information helps coverage work as intended when an employee needs it most.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT
Summer reminds me how fortunate we are to live and work in such a beautiful community.
Whether it’s enjoying the beach, visiting a local restaurant or supporting one of our small busin
esses, there are so many ways to recharge close to home.
Running a business teaches us to keep moving forward, but taking time to pause can give us the fresh perspective we need.
I hope you and your team have an opportunity to enjoy everything summer has to offer.
Benefits are most valuable when employees understand how to use them.
If your team would benefit from a summer benefits refresher or you would like help reviewing your plan-administration records, please reach out. I’m always happy to help.
Benefits built around your business.
